Have you ever thought why small light/LEDs are used on road and what is known as?

They are known as Road Studs. One of the foremost popular road markings you'll widely see among roads, bridges, and subway systems are road studs. These mechanical road markings play an integral role for motorists and drivers to stay in their lanes especially when driving at nighttime.

In the nighttime, car drivers couldn't see where the road ends and where the alignment of road changes in direction. Without a sufficient number of road lightings, it's necessary to provide some means to guide the drivers along dark roads.

Hence, in 1933 Percy Shaw invented the cat’s eye (i.e. road studs) which is predicated on the principle of cat’s eyes. When a ray of light enters the eyes of a cat, the light shall be reflected towards the emitting source. As such, with the reflection of car’s headlights by road studs, it's possible to spot road conditions and alignment in darkness.

Types of Road Studs:

With these grooves, the road studs are then set at their low point with an approximate distance of 1.6 centimeters just below the surface of the road. Permanent road studs of this type are most common among tunnels, bridges, and major highways.

Moving on to the temporary road studs, these are usually installed in areas or roads where construction or work is still occurring. The mechanical road markings used are essentially the same as the permanent road studs. The only difference is that the road studs are installed on a bitumen or epoxy overlay. So, when work or construction is done, the temporary road studs can simply be removed without damaging the outer surface of the road.

How solar road stud works:

The solar road stud consists of the solar panel, LEDs, accumulator, and shell. The solar panel on the highest of the solar road stud absorbs solar energy within the daytime, which may be transformed into electricity and stored inside the accumulator, and at night, the electricity in the storage device can be automatically converted into light energy, through the LED light to show the path outline and guide the sight of drivers.

Method of Installation of Road Studs:

  • Install the isolation facilities. The installation place should be even and confirmed first, and the plastic cones should be placed on the edge of the installation site in advance.
  • Deal with the adhesive surface.
  • Make up the glue for road studs.
  • Gluing and pasting.
  • Solidifying and maintenance.
